Award Mention in Despatches Lt. Robert Gordon Clover, 149th Anti-Tank Regiment, Royal Artillery (91879)

ESCAPES FROM CAMP 49 (FONTANELLATO). ITALY

    RECOMMENDATIONS FOR AWARDS|
    (1) After the Armistice with Italy, the Italian Commandant of this camp handed over to the Senior British Officer, who organised P/W into companies and ordered them to be ready to march out at five minutes’ notice on the sounding of the alarm by the camp bugler. The alarm was sounded at 1300 hours on 9th September 1943 and everything went according to plan.

    (2) I recommend the following officers for the awards shown, brief partiulars being given in the enclosures stated opposite their names:-

Interesting to read of another POW train bombed by the RAF, this time at Colleferro not far from the temporary POW camp at Frosinone, set up by the Germans after the Armistice to house recaptured escapers but also men captured during the allied advance from Salerno onwards. The camp was emptied early in 1944 and the men were transferred by lorry to nearby PG 54. They were then put on the train bombed on 28 January 1944 at Allerona (USAAF).
In this phase of the war the RAF bombed a train in Aquila station whilst recaptured and newly taken POWs were being put aboard - 8 December 1943.
