ESCAPES FROM CAMP 49 (FONTANELLATO). ITALY

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR AWARDS|

(1) After the Armistice with Italy, the Italian Commandant of this camp handed over to the Senior British Officer, who organised P/W into companies and ordered them to be ready to march out at five minutes’ notice on the sounding of the alarm by the camp bugler. The alarm was sounded at 1300 hours on 9th September 1943 and everything went according to plan.

(2) I recommend the following officers for the awards shown, brief particulars being given in the enclosures stated opposite their names:-

Captured at TOBRUK on 14th September 1942, Lieut. LASCARIS was sent via BARI and REZZANELLO to FONTANELLATO (Camp 49). On 21st January 1943 he was involved in a plan to escape from BARI, but the officer cutting wire was discovered.

On 9th September 1943, when Camp 49 was evacuated, Lieut. LASCARIS accompanied the other P/W into the hills. A few days later he and two other officers proceeded south. Posing as Italian deserters, they reached British forces near CASACALENDA on 13th October 1943.

Lieut. LASCARIS did extremely useful work at Camp 49 just before and immediately after the Armistice. He speaks fluent Italian and was valuable as a liaison officer to the Escape Committee. He was also largely responsible for getting Lt.-Col. H.S.K. MAINWARING, D.S.O. (30735) through ITALY.
