L/Sgt. Edward Albert Provins, 31 Searchlight Regiment Royal Artillery, (2049201) who has been awarded the George Medal.

Sergeant Provins was in charge of a searchlight site on the 22nd December 1940, when a Wellington bomber crashed near the site and burst into flames. Before the plane had crashed, Sergeant Provins tried to give the pilot every assistance to enable him to land the plane safely by swinging a searchlight beam in the direction of some trees and also on the ground so as to indicate its hilly nature. His actions however were unsuccessful and the plane eventually crashed. Sergeant Provins at once formed a rescue party from men of his detachment and proceeded to the scene of the wrecked machine. Although the plane was burning furiously and bullets were flying in all directions, Sergeant Provins continued to direct rescue operations with coolness and efficiency.

Gunner David John Edwin Roberts, Royal Artillery, (2083844) who has been awarded the George Medal.

Gunner Roberts who was a member of the rescue party, assisted in lifting one of the wings of the burning plane and then went in among the flames and dragged out a member of the crew who was covered in oil , with his boots, trousers and hair burning. Gunner Roberts got the man clear of the burning wreckage and extinguished the flames on his burning clothing. It was greatly due to Gunner Roberts' courageous action and disregard for personal safety that the man was extracted alive from the wrecked plane.
