Award Distinguished Conduct Medal Tech Fourth Grade Walter A. Hull, 94th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron

WALTER A. HULL, 32844230, Technician Fourth Grade (then Private), Troop, 94th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron Mechanized, 14th Armored Division. For gallantry in action near Moutherhaus, France, on 1st January 1945. While in dug-in positions north of the town, Private Hull's platoon was attacked by a numerically superior enemy force. After a two hour attack, the enemy was finally successful in surrounding the platoon. On his own initiative, he picked up a light machine gun and carrying a heavy ammunition belt across his shoulder, went through intense small arms and mortar fire to a position from he was able to lay down a path of fire which opened a passage through enemy lines so that his platoon was permitted to withdraw with a minimum of casualties. Entered military service from Buffalo, New York.
