Award British Empire Medal L/Cpl. Herbert Schoen, Palestine Regiment Force 133 PAL/23173

Cpl. Schoen, an escaped P/W. was a member of the B.E.F. which went to GREECE in 1941. He evaded recapture and in GREECE eventually in March 1943 joined up with the Allied Military Mission in THESSALY. He later acted as interpreter to Major. JORDAN, the Area Command till June 1943. Major Jordan reported:-

SCHOEN is a versatile soldier, spealing several languages he was a great help to his Officers. He was fearless in the face of both Germans and hostile ELAS guerrillas and was entrusted with important missions during the civil war. He always showed complete disregard for his own safety in carrying out his duties.

SCHOEN is one of a number of ex P.W. who owing to their usefulness have been retained by the Allied Mission in GREECE, while others of no use have been evacuated. It is recommended that in recognition of his devoted service he be award the Military Medal.
