A report of a visitor leaving an adverse review on account of two portraits of Wehrmacht family members of the hotelier displayed in uniform in the hotel entrance (it later transpired that they were members of the NSDAP )

Legal threats seem to have subsided and the portraits taken down.

German tourist sued for complaints about hotel's Nazi portraits

This reminds me of an acquaintance of mine who related some years ago he witnessed the attitude of a hotelier in a mountainous area of Austria. His firm were carrying out work in the area as contractors and stayed at the hotel.Apparently the landlord's political persuasion was clear to all to hear that he was a supporter of the Third Reich which made the group uncomfortable.....the job had to be done and they had to endure this background until they left.......apparently no adverse report on the standard of accommodation

Difficult topic. Everyone is someone's son or daughter or relative. As an example, I stayed in private accommodation in Budapest many years ago - hotels were all booked up - and the old man and lady whose house it was were two of the most charming people you could ever wish to meet. They had clearly lost their much-loved son in the War and one of the rooms was set up as a mini shrine. It was obvious from the portrait photos that he was Hungarian SS........ I felt sorry for them but totally understand why others might think differently and quite reasonably so. It all depends on context.

Sort of reminds me of a business trip to Vienna back in the 70s the local rep of the company I was dealing with was very courteous and helpful and spoke excellent English on which I complemented him. He replied that he had lived in Canada for a few years "during the last misunderstanding". As Basil F put it "don't mention the war"

It seems to me that some other photos of the relatives, not in uniform, would be more tasteful.

"The picture of the uncle in a Wehrmacht uniform had been the only picture in the family’s possession."
