This is the 10th page of this thread, over the course of which a few people have mentioned that they have in fact heard birds sing at Auschwitz. I believe it would be quite possible to go there, hear birds sing and yet still feel a degree of empathy towards the victims who suffered and died there.

I'd rather we didn't veer off topic here - the subject of ghosts etc, if it must be discussed, can be dealt with in another thread in Barracks. Thank you.

Yo no me creo in brujas pero que las hay, las hay!

There is testimony in this thread that birds do sing in Auschwitz, the matter is closed for me.

Its probably as someone else suggested, if you're not listening you don't hear it.

If I go I will try and remember to listen and then will know either way, and post my impressions.

I have been to Aushwitz and I can tell you this is an ubran myth. Animals have no empthy to human suffering.

When I visited Auschwitz and Berkenau in January 2010 there were birds sitting in trees above the small gas chamber/ovens in Auschwitz.
There was no animal life on view at the larger camp.
There was no bird song audible at either place , however, it was -24C !!

I have to say the larger camp with it's forest of chimneys left a lasting impression on me. Such a heart wrenching feeling to stand on those tracks and imagine that just a short distance away a complete stranger would determine your fate.....Ugh!

That's an opinion, not a fact. I do think they have empathy, in fact scientist and other professionals know that they have it towards other animals and I've experienced it myself.

But besides that, I'm reading just how many posters have visited some of these camps. I know that's something I could not do being I'm highly sensitive and also an empath.

Did the place still smell? Being that it was so cold I'm guessing not....maybe.

Can we please limit comments on this thread to those who have been to Auschwitz/other camps, and who have observations to make about whether they heard birds sing - or not.

I refer others to Owen's posts no.s 14 and 15 which closed the matter for me.

There are birds at Auschwitz-Birkenau I have seen and heard them , having said that the site does have an atmosphere which is tangible.

I too was cynical about these statements but soon changed my mind when I visited Belsen. It really was eerily silent. not a single bird in the trees or sky and this was in the heat of summer.

Birds are clearly heard and as Owen said, you can see a Sparrow at 4 mins in.

Which is nowhere near Auschwitz & has a different landscape around it.

I visited Auschwitz/Birkenau in May 2009. Sorry to spoil an old legend but there were plenty of birds and wildlife in evidence, in both camps. I think you'r so focused on what the place is all about that, you just dont see other things.

I created this after I came home. It's an experience I'll never forget.

I was in a lorry passing Belsen, I didnt know it at the time. It was a stinking hot day. Suddenly I began to freeze, it was really cold. I commented on this and one of the lads said we are passing Belsen. Afterwards it returned to the hot weather all around here!

Another time, visiting Belsen itself, I noted that all was quiet, no birds, no insects, a feeling of 'something' hung over the place, something not nice.

Since the advent of the net, I have researched Belsen thoroughly, for my site, no wonder it was a horrible sense of doom.

strikes me as very similar experiences of Belsen and Kranji in Singapore. There is main roads very close ,but hardly a sound can be heard inside the grounds.

I WAS IN THE Concentration Camp, walking around. Jeez, some people. And before you ask yes, I DID take this picture. In 1986.
