Hello, I just began the search to learn more about my great grandmother's service. I don't have much to go off of and am having a very difficult time finding information anywhere. I did request her official records from England, but figured I'd post here since everyone is so knowledgeable about this process. Here is what I know:
Name: Jean Violet Chapman Cowley (Most likely Jean Cowley was what she went by, but there may be variations that she went by such as Violet instead of Jean)
Apart of the Auxiliary Territorial Service until 1946, was married to my great grandfather (a U.S. Soldier) on the Antwerp station in 1945 and immigrated to US in march of 1946
That is it. I have no idea of what she did specifically. She never spoke about her service duties, and often said she was "sworn to secrecy". Many in my family think she was a decoder, but I am unsure. Any guidance or assistance with this would be great! Thank you.

    Welcome aboard.

Under Jean / Violet Cowley she has not appeared here before and nothing readily found online.

Pending the arrival of her records I suggest you follow the 'tag' for the ATS (which does not always capture every thread) and see what roles and where the ATS served. My late mother worked in a massive ordnance factory @ Nottingham and others served with anti-aircraft batteries in the UK for example. Yes, some (in their hundreds plus) served in intelligence oles, notably @ Bletchley Park.

Curious to see her possibly serving in Belgium, Antwerp being a key supply port and hit by V-rockets at times.

You could try an online search with "ATS" or "Auxiliary Territorial Service" site:ww2talk.com to capture more threads here.

Wiki gives a potted history: Auxiliary Territorial Service - Wikipedia as does the more reliable: Auxiliary Territorial Service | National Army Museum

    Good luck.

    Hello Gabby,

It might not be her but I have a letter written by an ATS named Violet Cowley, from Croydon, Surrey. Cowley is her husband's name, a British paratrooper killed in North Africa, November 1942. Maybe she kept his name before she married again with your grandfather? Could that be her?

    Looking forward to reading you,

    Clément
