Am I becoming Arnhem Barmy I received my Casualty Care DVD from Airborne Medic regarding the Airborne Medical Services at Arnhem during 1944, on the DVD is a commentary given by Captain Stuart Mewson the Medical Officer of the 11th Parachute Battalion and author of Arnhem Doctor. In the film Cpt Mewson is filmed outside the house and Garage where he first set up a RAP, I have always been intrigued about the exploits of Cpt Mewson since reading his book and wanted to see where he set up his RAP before hot footing it back to the Schoonoord Hotel with his casualties and then working with the 181 Airlanding Field Ambulance RAMC during the battle. After watching the scene I have been trying to locate the house using Googlemap and with the “little" clues that Airborne Medic has sent me I think I know where it was based, I would like to say to AB you are a tease but a great help with my endeavour to find the house.:p now just looking forward to a return trip to Arnhem/Oosterbeek hopefully next year to see it for myself

I reckon its a Medic thing...... all about the right hand shakes :p But I did have to purchase a book by an author called N Cherry also
Red berets and red crosses??? Naaaaaaa Got it , Its Arnhem Surgeon a small booklet about Captain Michael James of the 181 AFA RAMC who was working in the Schoonoord Hotel at the same time as Cpt Mawson, the booklet is an addition to RB & RC. Oh and sorry for the spelling mistake its Mawson not Mewson
Blimey, I've bought everything by that author (well OK, not everything, but almost!). Do you think that entitles me to a copy of the DVD! ............
I always wondered where that place was. I assumed that it had been torn down years ago. However, I thought that he referred to it as a barn in the book. I could be wrong because it has been years that I have read it.

I believe he was a private of THE 6th airborne division But Please, tell me more about the dvd because I don't have it This is very intersting to know . . . . . . . . . My Grandfather never spoke of the war until he re-visted arhnem for the 50th annivesary. He then began to talk as his nightmares had been put to rest. He told me how he was in the 195th and 181st ALFA. When the 195th returned from Normandy, I belive an officer took himself and 6 men to join the 181st for the Arhnem campaign. My Grandfather had a terribble memory and was never in any sort of society or memorial / british legion groups BUT he did quote to me that he was in the 181st. I have no reason to doubt him. His service record however has a gap between returning from Normandy in Sept '44 and deployment to the Ardenne in Dec '44 and there is no mention of the 181st or the 1st Airborne I believe person you speak of may have been - like my grandfather, unoffically taken to Arhnem as a Normandy Veteran, for his expertise, before returning to the 6th Airborne
I doubt if any men or officers unoffically went to Arnhem!, first of all there was a shortage of gliders and planes so 7 extra men were very hard to fill in. Also none of few medics decided to go back across the Rhine and decided that it was there task to stay behind and take care of the wounded. The only ones who inoffcialy ended up in that area were members of the army, hiked along with a crewmember they knew on a supply trip to Arnhem.
Philip - Would it be fair to say then that it was possible to enter Arhnem from the Ardenne between Dec '44 and Feb '45? I know that from the Bulge they moved to Antwerp and then into Holland to take over the defence of a line on the Mass, previously held by the 15th Scottish Division If so then this claifies the story that an officer took 6 of his men to Arhnem from the 195th ALFA 6th Airborne to assist the men of the 181st ALFA 1st Airborne
