this is the clearest copy of that pic that i have yet seen- really like the extra detail. the saak website says that it is taken from the front garden of #5 stationsweg, and other sources i have seen state that it's at #8 stationsweg. but using the street view on google maps it seems that it's more likely taken from the garden of #2 stationsweg, the big grey house on the corner of utrecthsweg, and that the house across stationsweg is #5 stationsweg. am curious to see what anyone else thinks..... cheers, rob
Hello Rob, I'm not familiar with the "Saak" website you mentioned. Can you provide a link? Also if you go here, http://clients.teksavvy.com/~robcairns/Stan_Cairns_Glider_Pilot/Pictures_-_Oosterbeek.html you'll see that the occupant of No.8 at the time of the battle clearly states "A patrol going out of our gate". All the best
Thanks for posting that Paul. I have been looking for copy of it. It is on the back cover of GPs at Arnhem and the label reads F Sqn (my Grandad's sqn)
An excellent talk was given about the Glider Pilot positions in Stationsweg was given by Luuk Buist and Steve Elsey on the Friends of the Airborne Museum Battlefiled tour in June this year. Luuk also produced a very comprehensive handout to accompany his talk with many photos and maps of the various GP positions (not all in colour). John
well, i cant argue with that, lol. my conjecture was based on the appearance of the house across the street looking very close to stationsweg #5 when viewed from the front garden of #2 (at least on googlemaps street view), and it was the only house on the street that looked that close. i noticed that in the album copy of the photo in question mrs. kremer mentions that the house across the street was burnt down by the germans- that would explain my difficulty in finding it on the street currently! sorry for speaking without all the relevant information, and thanks for the heads-up! cheers, rob
http://www.saak.nl/battlefield%20tour/2011%20oosterbeek/oosterbeek%202011%20en.htm- an interesting website, written by a man, i believe, who gives tours of the oosterbeek battle sites. i think his listing the g.p. patrol pic as being at '#5 stationsweg' is probably a typo on his part, because in other pics he correctly calls it #8. cheers, rob
Luuk made reference in his tour to the various houses that burnt down or were otherwise destoyed during the battle. There were quite a few on the west side of Stationsweg and so unfortunately it is quite difficult now to match up the 1944 photos with the 2013 equivalent or with google maps.
