Does anybody have any information with regards to what happen to the Jeeps that were aboard these 8 gliders and attached to 2 Para, ie where did they end up after landing.

Also what would their primary use of been?, I ask because it has come to light that my grandfather came in by glider. So I was wondering, as he was a batman to an officer in HQ Coy could he of been on board to drive a Jeep for him?

    Cheers

Ive just found a reference in James Sims, Arnhem Spearhead for a Jeep being called into use by the anti tank section on the outskirts of Arnhem. Has anybody come across any similar references in print?

    Hi Jason

Thanks for that, its pretty much the information I already have. Im now interested in where the Jeeps ended up and the names of the crews on the afore mentioned Chalks.

As I said when we met the other day, I have been told there are only approx 17 manifests still in existence, so Im not holding out much hope:(:(

996 was also aborted due to toe rope snapping and was then moved to third lift, should also mention 994 had gone twice and aborted twice on 2nd and third lifts

Ive just found a reference in James Sims, Arnhem Spearhead for a Jeep being called into use by the anti tank section on the outskirts of Arnhem. Has anybody come across any similar references in print?

Would this be the incident when the leading elements of 2 Para came under attack at the railway bridge on Benedendorpsweg and an anti-tank gun was called up to deal with the threat? Before the anti-tank gun could be brought forward the German AFV that was causing the problem had retreated out of sight.

The passage reads as follows and is at the bottom of page 43.

'The cry was passed down the column until it reached the Anti Tank Section, who piled into a Jeep and came careering down the road whooping and cheering as they made ready with their Piats, as though attempting to knock out an enemies AFVS was great fun

Would interesting to find out how many Jeeps attached to 2 Para are mentioned along the way:)

Don't forget guys the anti-tank section with the 2nd Btn only had PIATs...the 6 pounder a/t gun would have been from the 1st A/L A/T Battery.....

Thanks Niall, Im just trying to pin point any of the Jeeps that came in for the 2nd Battalion. The James Sims reference is the only one I have at the moment and as in mention Piats I assume it would of been Frosts lads.

Ive just had this back from Arie-Jan Van Hees, Im now looking for the Glider Pilots names of these Chalks.

Glider chalk numbers 463-466 were allotted to 2nd parachute Battalion, carrying 8 jeeps.
As far as my research shows, these jeeps were alotted as follows:
-Battalion HQ: 2x (one for Lt-Col. Frost and one for his 2nd in command)
    -HQ Company: 2x
-Support Company, and A, B and C-Companies: 1 jeep each.

All 2nd Bn jeeps arrived safely at Landing Zone 'Z'.
Having landed there 4 more jeeps of an anti-Tank platoon attached themselves to the 2nd Bn column which moved to Arnhem bridge.

It's a bit long winded but Luuk Buist tried to put chalk numbers with the respective GP's names - where he was able to do so they appear in the nominal roll in "Glider Pilots at Arnhem". No guarantee as there's many unknowns but it's probably your best chance.
