    Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help. I'm researching a man who is recorded as having been "...embodied Territorial Army at Netley and posted to No4 Company, Army Dental Corps, 18th January 1940"
I know that Netley was a large military hospital but I'm wondering if, as a new recruit, a man would have presented himself there on day one of his service or whether he would first have had to undergo his basic military training prior to this date? If this is the case then the dates supplied by the MOD don't seem to match up - his dates of service, as supplied by the MOD, run from the 18th January, when he arrived at Netley?
Also apart from the entry mentioning No4 Company no other units are mentioned until 1942 when he was posted to No 21 Company? It is known that between 1940 and 1942 he was based near Wells in Somerset but we have no idea where? can anyone shed some light on these few dates and details?

Also, and possibly not best placed in this thread, but would his service number, 7537011, denote someone who volunteered or who was conscripted?

    Regards

    Jeff

All Army Dental Corps recruits where trained at the RAMC depot at Church Crookham near Aldershot during WW2, However its noted your man was a Territorial so he may have gone straight to a Military hospital as he had already completed some initial army training, I presume this chap may have had Dental training already.

Apparently, as I understand it, no. I have found no reference to his having been in the military prior to 18th Jan 1940 - and the dates come from those supplied by the MOD. With regards to his having had some sort of dental training already, again no - he worked in a blanket mill. I have contacted the Royal Army Dental Corps museum in the hope they may be able to help.

    All the best

In relation to the above posts, does anyone have any information on the Army Dental Centre in Wells, Somerset during WW2, specifically in the period 1941/42?

...NEW INFO: The dental centre may have been in Weston-Super-Mare as this was where the man in question had lodgings. So to update this request I should also ask if anyone has any information on military units in and around the Weston-Super-Mare area during 1941/42 which the dental centre may have serviced?

Also, in regards to his movements, I do know that in September 1942 he was posted to No. 21 Company (?) and then the following month to No. 11 Depot (?) and appointed acting corporal. I have no idea where these units were based - any ideas?

In November 1942 he was at the Hotel Great Central at Marylebone, London (which at the time I understand was being used as a convalescent home by the Army) - I'm wondering if No.11 Depot and the convalescent home were connected?

Any and all help greatly appreciated

    Jeff
