How longs this thread been running???? How many replies?????
and how many hits???? Owen you have opened a can of worms
thats for sure. I grew up in a generation where we sang "Hitler has
only got one ball" and skipped around the playground hand in hand
singing "Who wants to play war" only meters away from where
my Granddad was killed by a German soldier. My gran the wife
of my Granddad had German POW's come round for dinner after
working in the local village, this was after her husband had been
killed. My Nan was a strong women, she was well respected in
our village and everyone new her, she was left to bring up their
three children alone....was she Anti German???

of war is that it forces men collectively to commit acts against which
individually they would revolt with their whole being." — Ellen Key<O:p</O:p

Am I Anti German and do I think this forum is Anti German

French are this, French are that, but when it comes down to the nitty gritty military cooperation carries on undisturbed.

Ill be flat out honest i offered to bring a HIGHLY decorated american vet into the forum but after some of the snotty ass comments and additudes i basicly told him dont bother.... This site is entirely too british oreintated and I dunno i saw nothing in when i first checked this site it was By brits for Brits.. im sure ill catch hell for this OH WELL

It is British oriented, but then that is it's purpose and reason for being. If you disagree with a comment, pull out your books and offer a well referenced rebuttal to the orginal opinion. Most here are reasonable people and can see well ordered logic over opinion.

    There's loads of general forums.
There's a fair few specifically Axis related ones.
Not that many that mostly focus on the British & commonwealth, and have a primarily British user base.
Internet niches are a bit more interesting to me than generalism.

The 'flavour' of this site is what it is, and I'm not sure it's worth reading more into it than that. It's a rather sweeping assumption to think that because people mostly talk about the Commonwealth nations here, they don't also have a wider appreciation of the other combatants.

As for 'snottiness' (though I'd describe it as a certain dryness, or even cynicism).
We are what we are ;).

    That's the truth!

Now, to the subject at hand.

Anti-German bias? By the leadership and leading forum membership - no. By some members? Well, that is pretty obviously a yes, although most don't seem to occupy a bully pulpit

Isn't hate and mistrust the reason so many had to die?

YouTube - Gettysburg: The "Killer Angels" Monologue

There are many germans who committed warcrimes, yes... But take away hope for a generation (after world war I) and promise it back (Nazism), find a group to blame (jews) and there you go... perfect setup for war..

Hating people will just make sure it will happen again... and again... and again...

In response to Ranger 6’s claims that I have inferred – or even implied my Anti American objections to his country – their leaders - their goods – services et al - I would make it known if it is not general knowledge - that I have on occasions made it quite clear in open forum my thoughts of certain of their leadersffice:eek:ffice" /><o>:p></o>:p>
    <o>:p></o>:p>
Therefore let me state that I am NOT anti - American - German – Irish – Welsh – Italian – Chinese or anyone else… and as always this is not an inference – implication - it’s on paper and open ! <o>:p></o>:p>
    <o>:p></o>:p>
So there we have it – this is after all promoted as a Commonwealth Forum and should be sufficient warning to all that the few WW2 Veterans – of which I am proud to admit – who are left will have their British experiences to draw upon but as I understand it – many have also read and even studied others’ experiences, strangely !<o>:p></o>:p>
    <o>:p></o>:p>
I look forward therefore to enjoying a couple of hours next month with Sapper during my possibly last trip to the UK, and an enjoyable lunch with Gerry and Ron if he so cares, when we can spread as much Bovine Scatology as required without being sent to Coventry.<o>:p></o>:p>

Tom, would you like to amend your gross generalisation about one particular religious group? :) I dont care how humourous you may find it, its not very nice.

  11. Tom Canning

    Gotthard-
The reference to the problem I have with that particular religious group is their constant throwing and exploding of bombs and killing innocent people all over the world -"as I said when they stop throwing bombs etc " I am most certainly anti that sort of behaviour - by anyone and I don't really care about his religion - nationality - or football team he supports - I see no humour in killing anyone for a religion or ideology - ergo I am anti -

and while I am by no means a computer expert -

who added the raspberries to my posting ??? -

THAT is not humourous either ! and I would ask you as a moderator to remove them forthwith - as that is not very nice either !!!

see my original "cut and paste" posting with the addition of the two "Office" with added>>>> marks ONLY which I failed to "edit"

    Less than cheerful

    Gotthard -
it appears that even my original posting has been interfered with as - I NEVER use any smiley's - my original posting was a 'cut and paste' from Word and showed the addition of two "office" one with a purple smiley and a few >>> marks on some lines which I failed to edit - and your quote below my original showed all the raspberry smileys - BUT my original posting did not...so someone has been busy stirring things up......probably very difficult to track down but I can assure you that I do NOT add any smileys to my postings.

    Cheers

I think it's about time this was wrapped up now don't you?
I think we've had the whole spectrum of replies there is to have.
We seem to be going off on many different tangents.
All very entertaining it has been but I feel if some totally off-topic points are continued there are going to be rather alot of members falling out with eachother.

    As for the 'German question'.
I hope you all flag up neo-nazi sentiments that you may see in the future to the Mods/Admin, thank you for that.
But if we have members who try to discuss German matters sensibly & honestly especially if they are about family members or researched into fallen German sevicemen then those queries will be treated with the same respect as if it was a thread about Allied servicemen.
After all they were all someones son.

    That's about it I suppose.

Maybe,as a double outsider (born after the war and not beying British ),I could post something ?
Caution :My English beying only slight above the level of "My tailor is rich ",probably I will hurt a lot of feelings ,but it is unintentionally .
Of-course,there are a lot of anti-German feelings on this forum:this is only natural .
1)The Vererans fought against an evil empire, and they can be proud of it .
2)They suffered, lost friends, relatives, saw a lot of atrocities (someone who saw Bergen Belsen, will never forget it ).
3)It is impossible to ask them to forget or forgive .
4)Time is not healing wounds:the wounds are bleeding again .
An other point :Passendale,Ypres,Tyne Cot are still living memories in Britain and will for ever belong to British history .The Cenotaph and Remembrance Sunday are typical British .
On the continent :I have the impression that the two World Wars have become something of the past ,and that reconciliation is more easily accepted .In France,on 14 july,German troops are marching on the Champs-Elysées :I don't see it happen in B ritain, but I can imagine the reaction of the Sun,if it happened:D .In Russia, some years ago,a German military band was playing Preussens Gloria on the Red Square :I don't see it happen in Britain, but I can imagine the reaction of the Sun ,if it happened :D.In Belgium (off-course an extreme example ),for most people,11 november is only a holiday .
    Why these differences ?
Maybe (but this is only a generalisation )the Anglo-Saxons have a more moralistic approach to war :war is something evil, and has to be fought for a moral cause :to end all wars,to save the world for democracy ,while on the continent, the approach is more realistic, cynical, fatalistic (you can choose what you want ):war is something inherent on mankind,it will never disappear,it is a natural disaster (the continent has been a battlefield for more than thousand years )and there is less leaning to commorate war .

I don't think I can agree with that one... us Anglo-Saxons have quite a history of 'war for war's sake'. The moralistic bit is pretty much modern (ie. within the past 100 years or so) thinking. Looking back over the centuries, it could sometimes seem that Brits go to war on occasion simply because they enjoy it!
