    Hi all,

I am 31 years old and I have never used a forum, I am only just getting to grips with it! I see Sapper, Ron and Tom are dab hands and are putting me to shame with their computer/ internet skills - yet another reason to salute them!

Thank you for a lovely welcome, it's is wonderful to find some like minded people. As soon as I declare that I am interested in WWII stories I see people look at me in confusion - a strange thing for a 31 lady to be interested in?

Diane - thank you for the welcome! In answer to your question I simply joined to read first hand accounts from veterans. I have been interested since we studied this war at school. Since then I have read as much as I can but I have found it hard to get stories from our guys. The Americans are very forthcoming and have made many movies and documentaries! (I am currently re-watching Band of Brothers for the fourth time) When I was younger (late teens) I would approach the older generation and ask them if they remember the war (cringe) I think I may have insulted a few older looking 60 year olds! I did find one lovely gentleman at a bus stop who told me he was a gunner on the ships, but then his bus came and carried him away ;o(

I am so happy to finally find people willing to share their stories. I think it is so important to learn from that generation. I am not a mother yet but I want my children to know all about this war, the people that were caught up in it and our heroes first hand accounts.

    Hi Carly
I've only been on the forum for a few months and like you I had never been on any forums before. No it's not strange to be a "girly" on here-there are quite a few of us! The knowledge of the vets on here is great-ask a question about most aspects of the war and they will be able to answer it-as can many others on here-they have helped me enormously. Just enjoy it and look around-my interest is mainly the Italian campaign but have learned so much more about other aspects of the war just by dipping in every day-it really is addictive:D.

Later posts from fb that might indeed be perceived as offensive are responses to a peculiar level of attack from some. A level I'm actually quite surprised at on here.

Yes, those attacks were made because people do not understand this world. If another 19 year old web developer joins the site I bet they would get the same crap too. I'm attacking because I do not put up with the crap and instead attack the people who enforce it.

Hi Carly, as Leslie said, it's not unusual to find a woman here, though for a while when I joined, I hid behind the widely held assumption that I was just another bloke. A good few of us are daughters or relatives of veterans who joined to further our knowledge/research and then stayed.

Just a quick selection of the less obvious links, some of which can be found on the front page.

Tom's People's war contributions - Tom really should put this in his signature. I always say: one is a particular all-time favourite of mine.
    BBC - WW2 People's War - Autobiog:

This is Gerry's site about his own regiment. His amazing work rate, encouragement and his determination to get things finished puts me to shame. I hope to meet up with him once again very soon.

And one from my area of interest - a story in his own words posted by Stan's daughter which is on the attachment in the first post

There is a difference between ability and interest. I no doubt realize that my 71 yo father has the ability to be computer literate, yet he has no interest. Nor does my 90 year old veteran friend. He told me that he did not want a computer because, "if I have one, I'll spend too much sitting down looking at it and not doing something." I have another friend who is 96 and also a veteran of the war and we chat on FB from time to time. It is what interests them.

I do not think that the OP intended to put a burr under anyone's saddle with his commentary, as indicated by his mea culpa when he edited the first post. I think his crime was a poorly thought out sentence and nothing more.
