My Father David Dickie REME Juno Beach 6 June 1944 Attached to 80th Assault Squadron RE 5th Assault Regiment RE 1st Assault Brigade RE 79th Armoured Division I’m hoping all the above information is correct I’m travelling to Juno Beach this year (2019) I’m arriving early @ 2/6/19 to avoid the rush and explore the area for a few days before the 6th June I plan to follow my Fathers route through France, Holland and crossing the Rhine on a 30 day tour to honour him and his colleagues There’s a lot of preparation and very little time before I go I’ve packed my bucket and spade! I’d appreciate any information or links to web pages with information on the route of 80th Assault Squadron RE, are there any veteran associations active? One persisting query is his rank, many sites quote “ACTING Quartermaster Sergeant” For the abbreviation AQMS I’ve always thought it is ARTICIFER Quartermaster Sergeant Can anyone establish which is correct for the rank in REME I’d appreciate any help with my adventure
Hello and welcome Do you have his service records Get a copy of military service records There are members on the forum who copy war diaries at Kew for a reasonable fee drew5233 psywar-org regards Clive
Try these for starters: 80 Assault Squadron RE. The fallen from 6/6/1944-9/6/1944 John Holland SAUNDERS (228040) - 1 Troop, 80 Assault Squadron Royal Engineers
Hello Clive That was a quick response! Thanks It’s a timescale thing I intend to get his Service Record when I return in July, but I understand I need his death certificate first (delay) Then that the Service Records can take 6 weeks? I’m leaving in 13 days, hence the appeal for information on this forum Pi** Poor Planning on my part I know, but I’ve got the opportunity this year, I may not get another chance I’m fairly confident he was attached to 80th Assault Regiment RE, I’m hoping that family members of his colleagues might’ve able to help In hindsight I should have shown “ 80th Assault Regiment RE” as the title of this post
