Ladies / Gents, As the header suggests, I`m writing to ask if anyone has ever tried to apply for a service record from the MoD without knowing the person`s service number and if so, was the application rejected? I`m desperate to get the service record of a close wartime associate of my grandfather and have everything on the chap except his service number. I`ve managed to track down his next of kin and they`ve provided the necessary written permission but no one in the soldier`s family has any of his wartime paperwork, or for that matter his medals. Seems it was all thrown out when he died. All I want is the basics but he passed away in 2000 so is still inside the "25 Year" rule as well. Anyone ever tried this? I suspect the chances are zero!. Regards, John PS: I believe he was Army Catering Corps.
All three I applied for never had service numbers and we got all three. You will need a date of birth if you don't have a service number.
Ah that`s very interesting indeed. The form clearly states you "MUST" have the service number which seemed a bit off putting, but your experience sounds like I may have a chance. Fortunately I have a D.O.B. from the death certificate so I`ll give it a go. Thanks very much for the quick reply. Much appreciated. John
Doh! Just realised it says - SERVICE NUMBER AND/OR DATE OF BIRTH MUST BE INCLUDED. I feel such a plon*er. Sorry about that, must pay more attention. There`s just so many hoops to jump through with these damn things.
