    GENERAL INFORMATION SHEET VII

    COMMONWEALTH WAR GRAVES CEMETERIES

    IN TUNISIA

Eight cemeteries in Tunisia hold the graves of the men of the British Commonwealth who fell in the 1939-45 War.

At the Medjez-el-Bab cemetery there is a memorial on which are inscribed 1959 names of men who have no known grave.

The cemeteries are situated as follows:

MEDJEZ-EL-BAB: the largest, with nearly 3000 graves. The cemetery is a short way out of town, about 37 miles west of Tunis, on the road to Beja. The town is served by bus and train from Tunis.

MASSICAULT: most of the 1,578 men buried here lost their lives in the preparation for the final drive to Tunis in April and May 1943.

The cemetery is at the entrance to the village now named Borj El Amri, 26 kms from Tunis on the road to Medjez-El-Bab and the service bus passes frequently.

OUED ZARGA: 239 officers and men of the United Kingdom army and eight soldiers of the Indian army. Oued Zarga village is about 50 miles west of Tunis and 19 miles further on from Medjez-El-Bab. The cemetery is on a small piece of land on the edge of a lake (artificial, formed by damming) across the road from the cluster of houses which forms the village.

BEJA: the cemetery is north of the town and its surrounding once-open country has changed profile to house large blocks of flats. It contains 396 graves. Beja is a large market town, 60 miles north-west of Tunis, on fertile grain-growing rolling plains. Bus and train services link it to Tunis.

THIBAR: small cemetery – 94 soldiers, 4 airmen, 1 Canadian soldier, on a very pleasant slope between woods and open fields. Thibar can only be reached by car – the nearest railway station is at Beja – and it is difficult to

make the journey in one day, except from
Tunis with a very early start.

    TABARKA: 500 men are buried
in this cemetery, 14 kilometres east
of the town. Tabarka town is on the coast
near the Algerian border, a port and a
holiday resort. It can be reached from
Tunis by rail, road or air, a distance of
    about 98 miles.

    ENFIDA: the graves here
totalling 1551, are those of men who died
in the British Army’s final battles in the
    North Africa campaign. The town
lies 73 miles south of Tunis (30 miles from
both Sousse and Hammamet). It is
    connected with Tunis, Sousse and
    Hammamet by road and rail.

SFAX: the war graves lie within
    the enclosure of the Civil
Cemetery, 4 kilometres south of the town
on the Gabes road. There is a total
of 1254 graves there. The Indian Army
plot is in part of the Civil cemetery. Sfax
is the second largest town in Tunisia,
the “capital of the south” about 167 miles from Tunis with good road, rail and air conditions to the capital.

This is fantastic information and long overdue to be known as one of the problems being that the Tunisian - like the Lybian amd Algerian Authorities have gone all Arabic on us and to look up the place we once knew - seem to be no longer - so Thank you for this....

    Hi Fossil,

    Great lead.

    Does he take photos?

I have 29 in 5 cemeteries in Algeria as well as the 25 in 5 cemeteries here in Tunisia.

I may have to start contacting our consulates for the more "out of the way" cemeteries such as Albania, Azores, Faroe Islands, Iceland etc.

Hi Fisher and welcome to the Forum

If you could take 17 photographs of the following faces on the Medjez-El-Bab Memorial, which is inside the Cemetery, you would collect nearly 700 names for members of this Forum.

    They are:-

    Faces 1, 6, 7, 8 & 9 - Royal Artillery and Royal Horse Artillery (215 names)
    Face 33 - Reconnaisance Regt (28 names)
    Faces 34 & 35 - Parachute Regiment, AAC (109 names)
    Faces 28, 29 & 30 - Durham Light Infantry (109 names)
Faces 11, 12, 13 & 14 - Coldstream Guards, Grenadier Guards, Irish Guards, Scots Guards & Welsh Guards (97 names)
    Panels 21 & 22. Whole panels.

It would be a great help and a significant contribution to the projects of 5 members.

    Apologies if I forgotten anyone.

    Regards - Rob

Fisher, Welcome to the forum. I have some names I would like if at all possible. List sent by PM. My father was in 56 Recce and I have collated the Rolls of Honour for all Recce Regiments and am in the process of collecting Photos of Headstones/Memorials to go with them. So far I have collected over 1300 photos.

Spidge, Recce Mitch, Ramacal thanks. Total of all your requests sounds daunting! (I was expecting requests for single individuals). You guys probably know more than I do about this type of cemetery. Perhaps the task is not so daunting and any suggestions on how to go about it would help. I had planned 1 day for this and walking j mansour, includng travelling there and back (4 hours approx).

Fisher, A map of the cemetery helps in planning the best way to photograph headstones. Map attached courtesy CWGC. Even if you can only get a few photos it would be much appreciated.

    Hi Fisher,

Please do not feel obliged if it interferes with the reason you have made the trip. That comes first!

If you do have a certain amount of time - Mark the requests with red dots then start at walking across to each section in order. You will find that you can get through them rather quickly.

    Remember that you come first!

Spidge. I lived in Melbourne from 1959 to 1966 in Vermont! went to Box Hill School for a while. Even pursuaded to support Hawthorn in a code I did not understand - full forward John Peck, Dixon in the ruck. Law as rover and Parkin in the back pocket! Why do I remember that?

Thanks guys for your input. Your general reponse is that I should concentrated on the main purpose of my visit which is my uncle who was in 1st Para. I will do what I can but dont expect too much please. Although I will go to Medjez-el-Bab cemetery my main objective is the Battle of Dejebel Mansour which took place between 3rd & 5th Feb 1943 south of Medjez near Bou Arada and the hill j Mansour where my uncle was missing on the 5th. There were 35 dead, 16 missing and 132 wounded. On the 5th alone there were 26 dead and missing. If possible I want to walk this 675m hill for the family. Anyway enough of that.

I notice from other threads that there is a suggestion that paratroopers can be trained "overnight" and anyone will do. You have to remember that 1st,2nd & 3rd Para were very highly trained forces. 1st Para was hand picked as "special forces" and had been jumping and had intensive training since 08/1940. Also they were incredibly fit by 1940 standards. Perhaps there should be a new thread about the early Paras.

Well they have been the most successful club of the past 50 years winning 10 premierships.
