i cannot be 100% sure but this looks like GRUMBLE possibly from 7 RTR.
    Can anyone confirm either.

    Cheers

I am under the impression - possibly mistaken - that the "outline" camouflage schemes were all by 3/4 CLY.

I think the camouflage scheme can be used to identify the regiment, in any case.

    Hi Michel,

I don't think even the irony of military humour would stretch that far.:surr: Besides it ends MBLE, I guess they may go as far as GAMBLE.

Their are “some” GRUMBLE’s……but now of these are Grants

    And a GAMBLE…..not a Grant

And a bunch more “?MBLE’s” but none are Grants

BUT, once a name was used “in the family’ so to speak, it tended to be “reused” when issued replacement or upgraded vehicles…..so it could have appeared in the units above again???

    Just trying to identify it.

I know. Is there any other context to help?

I thought 'CLY' with the camouflage scheme, as well, but I don't know enough to know if it was a regimental or brigade scheme, and the who was brigaded with them at the time.

No I was just tidying up loads of old emails some as far back as 2007, when i came across this image. There are no other details other than the text already attached to the image.

    Cheers

  16. I think the name ends with -DABLE. There are only 364 such words in English, so this should be a walk in the park (exactly 1 word a day for the coming year, with the mandatory break on 1st May):
Words in DABLE - Ending in DABLE

    FORMIDABLE is my today's choice.

    Hi Michel,

I have cropped the image and added a filter and it definitely ends MBLE.

  18. It depends on what we want to see. I definitely see what you mean: it could be an M, with the lower end of the middle 'V' level with the bottom of the 'legs', and the legs not vertical but slightly at an angle, or it could be an A (see what could be its horizontal, bar level with that of the E and the middle of the B) slightly leaning to the right, preceded by a D with the top right part a bit flatter, less rounded than the bottom right.
However, I still think DABLE is more likely than MBLE, because the left part is slighlty curved, because of the tiny space at the bottom of the 'V' in the supposed M, i.e. not 'V' but '\/', because of the presence of the small horizontal bar on the right part and the leaning right leg.
The 'M' is more like two inverted Vs with a space between them, the left one curved on its right side and the right one with a horizontal bar in its middle, so, not much of an M after all...

But all this is rather moot since we do not have enough letter to predict the beginning of the word :D

  20. According to our sister forum, units equipped with Grant tanks at the Battle of Gazala at end of May 42 were:

    --1st Armoured Division (HQ – 8 x Crusader II)
----2nd Armoured Brigade Group (HQ – 10 x Crusader II)
    ------Queen’s Bays – 44 x Crusader II, 12 x Grant
    ------9th Lancers – 44 x Crusader II, 12 x Grant
    ------10th Hussars – 44 x Crusader II, 12 x Grant
----22nd Armoured Brigade Group (HQ – 10 x Crusader II)
    ------2nd Royal Gloucestershire Hussars – 44 x Crusader II, 12 x Grant
    ------3rd County of London Yeomanry – 44 x Crusader II, 12 x Grant
    ------4th County of London Yeomanry – 44 x Crusader II, 12 x Grant
    --7th Armoured Division (HQ – 9 x Stuart)
    ----4th Armoured Brigade Group (HQ – 4 x Stuart, 4 x Grant)
    ------8th Hussars – 20 x Stuart, 24 x Grant
    ------3rd Bn / RTR – 20 x Stuart, 24 x Grant
    ------5th Bn / RTR – 20 x Stuart, 24 x Grant

So, gone are our hopes to narrow down the potential initial letter to one of the Royal Tank Regiment Battalions'...
