temptage I thought it would only take a few weeks......

I saw this in my local Cemetery, which because of the wording attracted my attention. 3 brothers interred elsewhere got my little nose twitching.

At first they reminded me of the escape tunnel names from The Great Escape.

But then I got my head down and started looking into them. The problem is that the names were probably 'family' names ie they called him John, but his name was Jack, same with Harry and Henry/Herbert.

Their parents names were John Abraham Ives and Rose Ives (nee Hipkin? Not 100% sure on that)

I have found George's CWGC record, certainly,

    IVES, GEORGE

    Rank:

    Seaman

    Service No:

    LT/JX241510

    Date of Death:

    12/04/1941

    Age:

    34

    Regiment/Service:

    Royal Naval Patrol Service

    H.M. Trawler Rosette.

    Grave Reference

    Sec. K. Grave 161.

    Cemetery

    SWANSEA (MORRISTON) CEMETERY

    Additional Information:
Son of John Abraham and Rose Ives, of Grimsby, Lincolnshire; husband of Marjorie Winifred Ives, of Grimsby.

but I cannot 100% pin down either record for the other two brothers, whatever their first names may be.

Hopefully someone with access to Ancestry.com may be able to help, and whatever help can be offered will be appreciated greatly.

    Thanks in anticipation

    Tony

1911 Census: Name: John Abraham Ives. Age in 1911: 31. Estimated Birth Year: abt 1880.
Birth Place: Grimsby, Lincolnshire. Street Address: 85 Legsby Avenue Grimsby
Occupation: Fisherman Skipper. John Abraham Ives, 31; Rose Ives, 31; Ethel Ives, 20; John Ives, 6; George Ives, 4; Harry Ives, 2.
Of course, the reason they may be interred elsewhere could be due to marriage, not necessarily war casualties.

Yes I know it is not set in stone that they are all war casualties. It was just the wording struck a nerve.

Thank you for the details of the 3 'boys'. I now know definitely, through a little more research, that they were born in 1904,1906 and 1908 so should be able to track them down through family history research.

    Thanks Kevin

Searching the births, comes up with the following. All were registered in the third quarter of the respective years:
    John 1904, George 1906, Harry 1908.

No second forenames were recorded and they are prior to the recording of mother's maiden name (which commenced Q3 1911).

Searching the CWGC records I also find only George. The recording of age is better in WWII than for WWI, so its easier to discount those entries with close names, but significantly different ages.

Searching death records for the period 1911 (we know they were alive then) to 1980 (arbitrary end date) produces the following. I've excluded military deaths from WWI as they would have been too young, even for naval cadets. I've left in those with two forenames and the format is name, country, registration district, (regiment/corps if applicable), year of death:

IVES John England Essex, Billericay 1932
IVES John A G Unknown Unknown. Corps: Royal Artillery 1942

Sorry, Tony, I didn't mean to sound dismissive. I can only say that it was late and I hurried to post without being my usual(?) tactful self.
Grimsby would tend to make one thing of Naval service, but that doesn't usually mean "interred" for burials at sea, so it infers a land burial....
I couldn't see any likely candidates in CWGC for the other two sons.
Their memorial looks much more recent than the rest of the grave surrounds, perhaps there were more children post 1911 who placed the memorial there?

    No need to apologise.

Grimsby didnt have a great deal of men that went to sea in WW2, well not compared to WW1 anyway.

I should be able to find out if they had any other 'middle' names as I can get access to all the BMD's on microfiche that cover the 'children's births. I should be able to find out if there were any later children, and even offspring of any of the brothers. Hopefully anyway!!
