This is a question that AM maybe able to answer, The Willys Jeeps that where converted to Airborne Ambulance uses, was the Stretcher support frames for the furleys Designed to be taken apart before embarking on to the gliders, as the frames extends beyond the rear of the jeep if they where not removable then they would have taken up a lot of needed space. Also any idea how many Ambulances jeeps where deployed with the Airlanding Airborne Ambulance units.
Quick comment.....does the annex on the airborne stretcher jeep at the back of RB's give any clues??? Can look later but don't have my copy to hand....... From memory I think an 'airlanding field ambulance' had 6......
Medic 7922 You'll see from the attached drawing that the rear supports were designed to be folded against the rear of the jeep during transport John
Well an ambulance has to be fast so it can respond to an emergency, Can you please restrict yourself to sensible comments...you have also been spotted putting comments on other posts which are not really suitable or approriate.....
Well an ambulance has to be fast so it can respond to an emergency, I think you need to grow up fella, your comments are neither funny or welcomed
Shall we get back to serious matters and ignore those stupid comments...... I see from RB+RC's 21 jeeps to the medical services for Arnhem: ADMS 1 + 1 trailer 16 5 jeeps + 4 trailers 133 5 + 4 181 10 + 6 So as the post asked how many with an AFA....10....Captain James's account used in Arnhem Surgeon says his FST had a jeep....so if the other FST had 1 that is 2..... 1 with each section.....5....total 7 so far...3 for use by the HQ/QM/CO etc......whether they were all fitted with stretcher brackets is a question I cannot answer...but on RB's page 157 is a picture of a jeep at Arnhem fitted with them takne behind the Klompenschool in the Weverstraat...... Hope this helps in some way.....

AB,Thanks for that, I did not have my copy of RB+RC to hand, I believe a Airborne Re-enacting group has one but there "Oop Norf", I am off to a Military Vehicle show in June near to Gloucester. A Chap often displays a Airborne jeep with twin vickers he also shows a a 181 Airlanding Ambulance water bowser and a few Airborne Medical panniers thrown in,but I have never seen a Airborne Ambulance jeep close up.
I think one of my Dutch friends may be at Arnhem in September with his jeep fitted out for stretcher use.......if he does I will take some pictures and post up......
There is some information on airborne vehicles in the Trux section of World War 2 Talk here (near the bottom of the page) from which I quote: Ambulance jeeps. All RAMC jeeps plus 10% of jeeps in units had fittings to carry a stretcher frame. It does not follow that all the vehicle had the frame itself fitted or in use. Frames could not be fitted to jeeps which had the spare wheel at the rear. Hope this helps Noel
When I lived in Aldershot in 2000, I went into the Airborne Museum and looked at the original records of the configurement of the Willys Ambulance (and the oxygen bottles stored in hay in big wicker baskets) I cant find any of my notes - sorry - but the Airborne Museum files are all the originals from trials etc before 1944
All very good stuff I have a 1942 jeep and am looking to fit a stretcher frame to it anyone got the actual drawings of the frame. I have the fitting instruction but want the actual plans for the frame Be Lucky Trev certs@fsmail.net
I think if they are going to be anywhere the plans might be at Duxford....then there is the booklet on airborne jeeps by Groucho Publishing (?) which might help....I have a copy but can't think where I have filed it.....will keep looking!
