Hello, I am an aviation researcher, but a case I am studying today is linked to the British Tank Corps. On 21 January 1943 the engine of the Battle I L5140 of 1472 (Anti-Aircraft and Army Co-operation) Flt RAF failed during an afternoon sortie. The pilot, Flg Off Lee, attempted a forced landing 1 mile E of Streatlam Park, 3 miles NE of Barnard Castle, Co. Durham, but struck a tank. The aircraft was a complete write off, but the pilot was uninjured. From what I have found in the internet, there were several training ground near Barnard Castle during WWII, and tanks units trained there, the 54th Training Regiment RAC moving there in 1943 (but I don't know if it was already there so early in the year). I will be interested to have a "ground point of view" of this accident, if it was recorded in the war diary or another report produced by a tank unit or school. I will also like to check if there were ground casualties. Thanks in advance
Laurent you are right that there were three training grounds for Tank regiments near Barnard Castle the 54th were near the township - th 59th were 5 miles East- and the 61st were at Streatlam and Staindrop areas - an Infantry Battle school opened up in the summer of '43 I joined the 61st at Streatlam in late January '43 and never heard a word about a plane crashing into a Tank... cheers
