I've been recommended to post my enquiries here on WW2 Talk.

    So here it goes...

I'm currently researching a airborne soldier, and was wondering is any of the forum members can add info on this.

General Service Medal 1918-62 with Palestine 1945-48 clasp. The medal roll revealed that 14983769 Sjt. L. J. Taylor R.A., served with 334th Forward Observer Battery (Airborne) in Palestine.
I know from what I have been able to find online, that 2nd Forward Observer Unit (Airborne) became 334th Forward Observer Battery (Airborne) in the summer of 1947.

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the units 2nd Forward Observer Unit, 334th Forward Observer Battery (Airborne) and any info related to Sjt. L. J. Taylor.

I presume he enlisted late in war, and maybe took part in Operation Varsity?

Looking forward to your response! Any help will be highly appreciated.

    Best regards,

    Bjoern Klausen

Welcome, here is a link to info on 2nd FOU. RA. 2 (Airborne) Forward Observation Unit, RA | ParaData another link with an account from a 2nd FOU member who also recounts service in Palestine. Go To It Gunners - 2FOU might be worth contacting Theobob, who's thread on his Dad and 2ND FOU is here, http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/user-introductions/22729-airborne-forward-observer-op-varsity.html

    wtid45,

Thanks for the links! Much appreciated.

I actually contacted the webamster of Go To It Gunners - Home, hoping he could set me in contact with Mr. Lumb. But I haven't heard anything back.

    And I will contact Theobob.

    Best regards,

    Bjoern

    Thanks

    Wtid45 and Dave,

Thanks! Yes, that is my project. Still working on it. 12 Danes served with 334th Forward Observer Battery. And at least 2 Danes served with 2nd FOU.

I have just received a copy of the entry for 14983762 Sgt. L. J. Taylor R.A. in the R.A. enlistment books.

And I was wondering if some of you would be able to help me with the units and dates mentioned on the card.

As I read it (Please correct me if I'm wrong!):

    Enlisted 31.8.1944

    Served:
    35th Training Regiment (Sig)
    R.A. Depot
10th Counter Mortar Battery (I guess he saw service in Western Europe with this outfit Do some of you know more about this unit by chance?)

He then went to India, and served with:
23rd Para Light Anti Aircraft Anti/Tank Regiment??
    158th Para Field Regiment
He probably went to Palestine serving with either 158th or 159th Para Field Regiment.
    159th Para Field Regiment
87th Para Light Regiment (87th Airborne Field Regiment?)

Am I right, thinking that 334th Forward Observer Battery was a part of 87th Airborne Field Regiment R.A.?

    Hope someone can help me.

    Kind regards,

    Bjoern

23 Para and 159 Para RA were both part of 44th Indian Airborne Divison. 44th Indian Airborne Division | ParaData And this should help clear up the query on 87 Airborne they were created out of 158 and 159 Para. 87th Airborne Field Regiment RA | ParaData In my copy of Cordon and search 334 FOB are shown in the 6 Airborne's OOB but not sure if they were under command of the 87th AFR although both were disbanded in July 48.

    wtid45,

    Thanks for that!

The reason why I was asking if 334th FOB was a part of 87th Airborne Fd., is that I know a Danish veteran who served with 87th Airborne. He had a close friend who served in 2nd Forward Observer Unit (334th FOB after April 1st 1947). Listening to his stories from his time in Palestine, it seems to me that there were a close connection between the two units.

I guess I should ask elsewhere on this forum, regarding info on 10th Counter Mortar battery.

    Best regards,

    Bjoern
