Hi all been researching a barrage balloon squadron that were based in Crewe (949 Squadron). There are a few abbreviations which I've not worked out. They are G.P.O. and G.R.O. Also do we know if any site maps exist regarding 949 Squadron barrage balloon positions in and around Crewe? Thanks for reading, Mark.
To help forum members 949 Balloon Squadron records from National Archives - can you also get Appendices??
Mark might be of interest Barrage Balloons As you know there were a few HAA and Searchlight sites around Crewe regards Clive
Hello Mark, It helps if some context is given, but looking at your other thread I assume that the abbreviations come from 949 Squadron Appendices. “1017 ‘Take Post’ from AA Gunroom 1053 YELLOW signal from GPO”. Here GPO = Gun Position Officer Where is the GRO abbreviation? Usually means General Routine Order. In the 949 Squadron Appendices GOR is used a good deal. Is this what you mean? Is so is stands for Gun Operations Room. Richard
Yellow - Preliminary caution. Purple - all external lights in factories turned off and glare from furnaces masked. Red - Raid imminent. Sound sirens. Green - Raiders passed. White - Cancel caution. Sound All Clear. Tim
