on my fathers war records are 2 abbr. T O S. and S O S. which according to the abbr. sheets sent with war records mean TAKEN ON STRENGTH and STRUCK OF STRENGTH. but can anybody tell me the actuall meaning of these words, it would be very much appreciated. pagey
No mystery. It means the date on which the serviceman is officialy attached or posted to a unit. From then on they are resposible for him. Ron
In short: Taken On Strength is 'added to the the unit roll' and Struck Off Strength is 'removed from the unit roll'.
I know someone (I think it was Wills) posted awhile back with the official explaination , something to do with official ration strength of a unit etc etc I cant find the post now.
T.O.S and S.O.S are indeed abbreviations that are published on administrative orders (occurrences) Part II/III Orders. the Part II/III orders are published and sent to the admin departments of the unit - pay office, Quartermaster, rations etc. Once TOS the unit is the soldiers 'parent unit'. Once posted on, the Part II/III order will inform the offices that the soldier is no longer on unit strength (SOS). The unit he is posted to will then follow the TOS procedure.

Many thanks Wills that has certainly cleared that up for me.
