I am doing war diary WO170/1237 for 64 LAA Rgt. 23 Armd Bde Gp to confer with Lt. Col. Berry (AA & OMG) What does AA & OMG stand for? Trawled through Google without any luck. Any gunners out there know?
There you go knew I had come to the right place, thanks guys you are wonderful. names Margaret by the way Owen (under the stairs - is that due to your wife or a life choice Owen!) As you may have guessed doing dad's war record so rather dozy on abbreviations - driving me up the wall actually, but heyho will be back guys if I get stuck again and nuts to Google Margaret
I think a Lt Col AA&QMG would have been a Divisional HQ staff officer, not Bde HQ, unless he was newly promoted and stayed in place in Bde HQ.
Back again guys - diary > off loading EFI and Red Cross stores. What does EFI stand for, this time had a look in WW2 talk list but nothing doing. While we are talking abbreviations what is CCRA and DDMS ref Brigadier please. Thanks Margaret B)
Thanks Owen. Still trying to find out what E.F.I. abbreviation means any thoughts anyone. It is referenced in the diary for off loading stores etc. Margaret
Hi Margaret (Temporary) Lt-Col Berry (23rd Armoured Brigade Group) was an Acting Lieutenant Colonel and the senior RASC officer in ARKFORCE, the name given for the composite formation of troops brought together for the landings in Greece in October 1944 all under the command of Brigadier Arkwright. Therefore ARKFORCE HQ staff were adopting roles typically given to Division HQs and even some Corps HQ Staff. ARKFORCE was disbanded as soon as HQ 3rd Infantry Crops (General Scobie) was in a position to assume command over all forces in Greece. In December when the troubles started in Athens Lt-Colonel Berry was again moved temporarily onto a hastily re-formed ARKFORCE (under command temporary Maj-Gen Arkwright) to be AA & QMG along with (Temporary) Lt-Col Phillips in the General Staff 1 (GSO1) role. Have a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/staff_(Military) and look at the British HQ formations. But remember, that's the way it should be, not necessarily the way it was in Greece. Hope this helps Gus
Hi Margaret EFI stands for Expeditionary Force Institutes It provided front line recreational and catering services to the British Army during the war. The modern day one is the NAAFI. Hope this helps Gus
EFI = Expeditionary Forces Instititute It is the NAAFI in uniform on operations http://www.naafi.co.uk/expeditionary-naafi The stores might just be cigarettes, shoe polish, beer stationary etc ,
Posting a reminder here for those folks who might find this thread later while searching for answers We have a forum database for Abbreviations (not just for service records but for any reference found in war diaries, histories, files, ... etc) http://ww2talk.com/forums/page/Databases/abbreviations.html It'd be great if it could be kept up-to-date - for the next enquiry that comes along.
Thanks guys for all your help - actually after lot digging found this "Efficient Facilities Initiative" in another research paper. It is wrong? Thanks Margaret
Right back again diary refers S.G.M. dump - another abbreviation what does it mean, looked in WW2 talk abbreviaitions but not there Roger and out
Margaret This is a new one on me and as most forum members will agree, I am seriously sad when it comes to Royal Artillery terminology! Can you post the context of the abbreviation, that might give an idea of the meaning. Regards Phil
Hi Guys see below for whole para from War Diary WO170/1237 "28 Nov. > Arrangements completed for certian commitments to be taken over by Greek Civil Police, relief commenced on Oil Storage Dept, Socombel, and certain S.E.M. dumps, also relief by Gendarmarie from Perama on Shell Installations." oops just seen typo, sorry I have a visual impairment and sometimes do not see errors. Above put S.G.M and now on further looking at writing in diary it appears to be S.E.M. Thanks Margaret
Hi Margaret I have a "SEMSEC Report" for 2 Dec 44, listing the locations of all the stores in Athens/Piraues and their contents, ie Signals stores, Royal Engineer Stores, Ammunition, etc. So I guess SEM must be the same abbreviation. I am sure someone familiar with RASC/RAOC jargon will come up with the proper definition. Gus
