There is, written in pencil on one of the pages of my Dad's AB64, the following:- 5 M.D.U. A copy of the page is attached, as I've never been able to find out what this is supposed to mean. Last night, I received a query from someone who has acquired the AB64 of another man in my Dad's unit, who joined up the same day and has a service number 28 higher than his own. In writing on several pages is something similar:- 2 M.D.U. The unit was the 7th Battalion, The Lincolnshire Regt, so may be a something specific to Infantry. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks - Rob
Have a look at this page: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/A2A/records.aspx?cat=1115-radc&cid=-1&Gsm=2012-06-18#-1 Lot's of references to MDU units, such as this one ? Also see this earlier thread: http://ww2talk.com/forums/topic/17646-looking-for-help-ramc/ Ron
Mobile Dental Unit does sound the most likely. Perhaps to indicate that the soldier has had a routine or pre-demob dental examination? (Although there were also Mobile Disarmament Units in NW Europe.)
I've seen MDU notes at the front of a few AB64's, but not all that many - if you look at Soldiers Release books they often have it written on the front and look to have the MDU stamp inside "Military Dispersal Unit" - running through some examples I have No1 Edinburgh No2 York No3 Northampton No4 London No5 Guildford No6 Taunton No7 Ashton Under Lyne No8 Hereford No10 Aldershot Cheers Alistair
