I’m searching for Any information regarding A.P Jenkins ( 413078 ) , Pilot Officer of the RNZAF during the battle of Cassino, he died on the 22nd of April 1944 aged 27.

Remembering Allen Phill Jenkins, RNZAF pilot - 1916 - 1944

Allen Phill Jenkins was born on 17th August 1916 in Wellington, New Zealand, the son of Philip Mexted Jenkins and Myrtle Harriett Beatrice Jenkins (née Munden).

Prior to his enlistment, he worked as an engineer and foreman for the Radio Corporation.

On 25th May 1941, Jenkins enlisted in the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF).

Almost three years later, on 21st April 1944, Jenkins took off at 21:15 local time with nine others of No. 114 Squadron, 232 Wing, Mediterranean Allied Tactical Air Force, from Foggia No. 1 RAF Base in Celone, Italy, in a Douglas Boston Mk. III-A (BZ365) coded RT-J, for a night armed reconnaissance mission.

The flight included three other crew members:

• Navigator Flight Officer A.E. Bradley (127117) from Worthing, Sussex, England. He was injured but survived the war.

• Wireless Operator / Air Gunner Sgt. Percival Joseph Edwin Moxey (1318956), son of Mrs. R. Moxey of Exeter, England. Aged 22, he was killed in action (KIA) and is buried in Cassino War Cemetery, collective grave III. A. 12-14.

• Air Gunner / Flight Sgt. Matthew Millar Hamilton (NZ/42325), son of Henry Murray Hamilton and Charlotte Calder Hamilton (née Sutherland) of Garston, Southland, New Zealand, and husband of Alice May Elizabeth Hamilton (née Soper) of Invercargill, New Zealand. Aged 29, he was killed in action and is buried in Cassino War Cemetery, collective grave III. A. 12-14.

Hit by German anti-aircraft fire and badly damaged. The New Zealand pilot climbed sharply to enable the surging crew to bale out. The two air gunners were killed by the initial firing. During the climb the tail broke off, but the navigator ( A.E Bradley ) managed to bale out.

The Boston crashed on hills near the village of Vallacorsa, with the remaining three crew. F/O. Bradley suffered a broken leg on landing but was assisted and cared for by a local Italian family. Evading capture he returned to his unit on the 28th May.

Hi KRAY. I am Allen's great niece. My family and I have been doing a bit more research lately as my Parents visited Vallecorsa and Cassino in June. We have been adding info to our local council heritage center.
Allen Phill Jenkins, war hero from Lower Hutt.
