A friend has asked me to post this photo of a friend of her mother’s family in the hope that someone might recognise the uniform, and perhaps date the photo. The photo was taken in Belgium. - possibly somewhere near Ostend. There is no name or other information on the photo. I’m wondering if it might be about 1944 - 1945, and possibly RASC, but not sure the cap badge fits with that theory. The image isn’t very clear, and the angle of the cap badge doesn’t help, so it might be difficult to determine. Possibly this type of uniform was standard; any help would be most appreciated.
Thank you, Owen. Can you tell me a rough date, please. Just wondering if it was very long after 1945.
Wiki reports that there was very limited production during the war until 1944 and I quote: Link: Volkswagen Beetle - Wikipedia KdF being the wartime model designation. Looked at a few Google images and there are a few showing the only feature I can spot, the wing mirror. Other non-WW2 images show a different wing mirror design used. I am sure a VW Beetle Club exists, might be worth asking there; no, I don't know of such a group!
The tailored battledress with collar and tie and no sign of officer's rank badges would put the photo into 1945. Having helped re-start production, BAOR used quite a lot of Volkswagens. They retained Ordnance depots in Belgium for many years and were of course shipping vast quantities of equipment. I believe that some did transit via Ostend.
Thank you, Rich, we were hoping it would be around that period. I will pass the information on to my friend; I know she will be very grateful.
