6th Field Regiment was the Artillery support to the 2nd Candian Infantry Division in March April 1945, when Canadian entered again the Netherlands.

    6th Field Regiment RCA
    - 13Field Battery
    - 21 Field battery
    - 91 Field battery

The wardairies of 6th RCA are available but they dont have that much detail. During the period 30 - 02 April was quite a lot of artillery support, according the wardiaries from the Infantry units, but this is not mentioned in the regimental war dairies.

Im looking specific into the battery who supported the South Saskatchwan Regiment, in their wardiary is mentioned that they recieved 2 FOO teams on 30st March 1945. But not from wich unit. This happend in the area of Netterden, Etten, Dinxperlo The Netherlands.

    Hop someone can help me.

Bedee, I’m not quite sure What you are looking for in your explanation, First the Dates, the dates I would assume is 30 Mar to 2 Apr 1945. Are you looking for specific bombardment information, a person ????

BUT, when looking for information for supporting Artillery units, the best method is look at the Unit your looking at (South Saskatchewan Regiment), then the Supporting Artillery unit (6th Cdn Field Regiment)……then look at the Infantry Units BRIGADE war diaries (as these usually have Operations logs for the time period your looking for)……and possible look at DIVISION war diaries (again for operations logs etc).

The Brigade and Division War Diaries also usually have the Op Orders and assignments of units (who’s doing what and helping who) etc etc

I have also gone to CORPS war dairies (again a wealth of information on movements and actions of units in their command)…….I do NOT usually look at ARMY war dairies (I find these are NOT as unit specific during time periods BUT again you never know, depending what your looking for, information may be in these also

If you can let me now WHAT exactly your looking for, then I’ll take a look at all of the above and see what I can find.

    Cheers

    Temujin,

More specific is 31 march the attack on Etten by the SSR, I looked already in all the diaries you mentioned. Except the army, with the same reason you mentioned.

During that day, SSR attacked Etten, during the night 31 march / 01 April one soldier died. Don't know his name but, local oral history stories say that it was a soldier from 6 Field Regiment.

That's why I mentioned the FOO teams, maybe he was a member of the Forward Observer team.

You don't need to read all documents but.... you never know.

Try CWGC website search for nearby War Cemeteries, I think they list the burials in each one. If not try contacting them.

Meanwhile Temujin in a mine of information if you can meet his criteria.

Thanks all of you for the help,

Still hoping that i will find someday the 91 Battery diary. For now this is the unit who supported the actions of the SSR in Etten.
Ivan Rayburn Nilsson was one of the, but the other option is that he was part of the FOO team.

Hi Bedee, while trying to learn how my great uncle was killed during ww2, I stumbled on your post. I was shocked to find you talking about my uncle Ivan Rayburn Nillson in your post and noticed that you may have some local knowledge about his death. I was always told since I was a kid that he was a "artillery spotter" (FOO) and that he was killed by a mortar strike, but I was always unsure about the story as I cannot find any details about his death in any military records. Thanks for your post as it has helped me find more records on him, and if you have any local knowledge on him I'd love to know.

Also here is a link to his military records if you'd like to take a look.

Thanks Maarten for the link to the book, I will definitely try to look into it! I've read through his records a few times in the past. I found it fascinating to be able to track his career as he moved throughout Canada and eventually to Holland. I appreciate all of the help provided by this great community!
