    Hi All,
I'm trying to find information on 8th Medium Regt's movements and battles they were involved in between July 1940 - September 1944. My grandad was a gunner in that regiment, but unfortunately passed away due to typhus while he was in Imphal (I think). Unfortunately, I don't know any other information about battery, troop or his role in the regiment. I'm currently waiting for his service records.

    Thanks,
    Pete.

Pete, the Regiment wasn't formed until September 1941 so your Granddad must have been in a different regiment before that. There is a very brief history of the Regiment on my site. See the 8 Medium Regiment page.

Hi Derek, thanks for the information. You are right about him being transferred from a different regiment. A member from the WW2 Burma facebook group sent me this, not entirely sure what it means..

    Cheers.

Peter, is the name on the card your Granddad? I think the fact that it was sent by a member of the Burma Facebook Group is a bit of a red herring as the units mentioned were not in the Far East. My interpretation is he joined I Battery in December 1940 from Army ?? and was posted to HQ Squadron 11 Armoured Division in December 1941.

There were two I Batteries in the artillery, one in 2 Regiment Royal Horse Artillery and the other in 13 (Honourable Artillery Company) Royal Horse Artillery. I think that 13 RHA is the most likely as the Regiment at that time were in 11 Support Group providing support for 11 Armoured Division. I can only suppose that the posting to HQ Squadron was for onward posting to an artillery unit, probably 8 Medium. Don't know what the "Not a member" means unless it refers to the HAC, a very exclusive TA unit.

Hi Derek, thanks again for the information, I think you're right about the posting to HQ Sqn before being posted to an onword unit - I wonder why he was posted to HAC? I suppose I will find out more when I receive his service records.. He must have been transferred to 8th Medium at some point, this was definitely the regt he was in when he died in Burma. And yes, his name was Spencer Howard.
    Cheers.
