• Mountbatten: Apprentice War Lord [PDF] [2e778fup2rq0] - "Instead, COHQ was represented by the magnificently monikered Major-General Minden Whyte-Melville MacLeod, a founding father of combined operations who in his time had served as a gunner on both the Western Front and the North-West Frontier. MacLeod had set up Combined Operations’ Middle East training centre at Kabrit on the Great Bitter Lake, and had only been back in England since January. He was himself a convalescent, having cracked his spine in a crash landing when the aircraft carrying him home from Egypt was shot down over the Welsh coast. Heaven only knows what the Americans made of this Buchanesque Highland aristocrat, especially if he chose to wear a kilt and leant heavily on his stalking stick. No doubt the latter was not the case, with efficiency trumping eccentricity: the CCO was too sensitive to the American psyche not to choose the right man for the job."
