Hi, I am trying find out which regement my late father would have been in while within the 80 coy R.A.S.C. He was enlisted as a driver in1940, and later also a mechanic. I have his soldiers service and away book, soldiers release book and certificate of transfer to the army reserve. All this tells me is name, number, rank and that he was in the R.A.S.C., I have many photo's taken during the war also of the Albion lorry he drove througout. I would like to trace his travels but I am sure I need his regement before starting looking up his service history. The photo's tell part of the story but there are a lot of gaps untill his release from the army in 1946. He died in 2001 and unfortunatly I did not ask these questions. I would be very grateful if any one could help me with this information. Gray
Hi and welcome to the forum Gray, good luck with your research. Could you post his name, army number the more info you can provide the better the guys on the forum can help you. Just a thought have you applied for his service records from the MOD Glasgow, or do you all ready have them? David
Hi Gray Basically, RASC did not (wartime) have units as large as regiments or battalions; they had companies. In any case, a company is smaller than a regiment or battalion so the company would be within the battalion or regiment. If you know he was in 80 Company then that is almost certainly as far as you can go. But do apply for his records as suggested above. Chris
Hi Both, Thank you for your replies, I do not have his service records as yet, I was of the opinion I had to apply from the the National Archives at kew, so should I apply to MoD Glasgow instead ?. For the record my fathers name was Harry Samual Cooper Atkins, army No., T/91758, Rank Private, R.A.S.C., on the soldiers release book is written 8 M.D.U, This also appears in his soldiers service and away book. If any one can shed any light on what that might mean it may well help. many thanks, Gray
Hi Gray, you get his service records from the MOD Glasgow, cost £30. You will need a death certificate as well. The info you can get from them is amazing and it will aid your research. Hope this helps David
Hi There are a number of references to an '80 Coy RASC' at the National Archives. Once you have the service record and more detail on dates etc it would be worth getting a copy of these either by visiting in person or via one of the chaps on here who can do the copying for you.
Hello and welcome to the forum. MDU Military Dispersal Unit? mentioned here http://ww2talk.com/forums/topic/49127-ab64-query/?hl=%2Bmilitary+%2Bdispersal+%2Bunit#entry578151 Link for ww2 service records https://www.gov.uk/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records Lesley
Hi, Just realised that my fathers red book reads "soldiers service and pay book" & not "away book" as I thought. His book cover is very tarnished. Gray
I have a booklet which was given to my grandfather, Sidney Bryant, who was a member of the 80 company RASC. It lists names of people also in the company and I have noticed that there is a reference to H. Atkins of Malvern Worcs. see attached photo. The booklet is a diary of the movements of the 80 company during ww2. Not sure if this is the person who you are looking for. Vanda
Hi All, I have a photograph taken in 1945 with label on it part of which is missing that reads :- 80 COY R.A.S.C. (INF ????) B.A.O.R., could in brackets mean Infantry, but what does B.A.O.R. stand for. I know what 80 COY R.A.S.C. stands for. The photograph is of the complete company at Hitlers Youth Training Barrack Brunswick Germany.
I have come across these photographs of my grandfather Sidney Bryant who was in the coy RASC. Not sure who the other people are but I thought I would post them anyway.
