8 Para Buglers - Palestine

Following service in NW Europe with 8 Para my Dad was sent to Palestine.

He was an accomplished Brass Musician before the War and whilst in Palestine 1945-47 he was appointed NCO i/c Battalion Buglers.

The Regimental Bands were not formed until 1947 so this was in the infancy of music in the Regiment.

Dad declined to stay in the Army at the end of his enlistment although he was asked to stay on and be a founder member of one of the bands.

His AFA3001 against 'other qualifications' states Music Theory Course MECEC.

I take this to be Middle East Command Education Centre - but stand to be corrected.

Can anyone tell me where this was? possibly Cairo or Alexandria?

Any photos around of Para Buglers at that time?

    Thanks

    Hi HP,

A very good photo of your father with his bugle! "The Story of Army Education 1643 - 1963" by A.C.T. White VC MC can be found for purchase on Amazon and elsewhere. No idea, however, how well the Army Education Corps in the ME is covered.

Do you still have the bugle and does it have any marks of origin, etc.? If your father participated in any of the 8 Para Campaigns did he take it with him? The Palestine section on ParaData has many photos. I didn't go through them all so can't say for certain if there are any with buglers.

There is also a WW2Talk thread on a commemorative Parachute Regiment bugle donated to the Duxford Museum.

Need info on my WW2 Parachute Regiment bugle... please help!

    Regards ...

    Hi Cee

    Thanks for the response

I have already trawled the ParaData photos but unfortunately no buglers there, although I did find a photo of him on patrol.

I don't have Dad's Bugle he did not start playing one until after the war whilst serving in Palestine and left it with the Battalion when he left the Army.

I'll hav a look at the bugle thread that you highlighted.

    Regards

    Dave
