Hi, I am new to the site a would to gather some information about the 7th Batt Somerset Light Infantry (Aug 1944). My grandfarther served with the 7th Somersets between 1939 & 1946. He was captured at Vernon sometime in August 1944, along with the rest of A coy, 7th SLI. I have his service records, POW papers and the book which covers their story during WW2. If anyone can provide any information or extracts of the WD for this period I would be most grateful. Great site and most helpful people by the way
Hi Dean and welcome to the forum. I can't help with the WD I'm afraid but if you don't already have it I suggest you get hold of a copy of Assault Crossing: The River Seine, 1944 by Ken Ford, which covers the battles around Vernon in detail. In the meantime you may find this site of interest. 1 seine crossing 1944 vernon Nick
Blatant plug for my own Then & Now photos from Vernon I took in 2007. http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/ww2-battlefields-today/11865-seine-crossing-vernon-1944-2007-a.html Have you got the 43 Wessex Division history ? I have & can scan the pages if you like, might not add much more as you already have the Bn history. I'm not sure if Paul has the WD for Aug '44, he's busy at the moment.
Hi Nick / Owen, Many thanks for the links, its helping to build up a good picture of things. I have heard from Paul and he is contacting me when he returns from Normandy. Thank you all so much, Dean
