As 56 Recce only joined 78 Div in Aug 42 I presume that their Sep 42 Diary was filed under 78 Recce by some clerk.

    78th Inf Div but 56th Recce ?

I know that 78th Division was newly formed without a recce regiment and that 56th Division was sent to the Middle-East without one (and then took on 44 Recce) but I'd be interested to know the exact chain of events.

For example was 78th Division formed with no intention of their having a recce regiment, was it a change of mind and 56 Recce were available, or was it planned all along? Were 56 Recce left behind by 56th Division because it wasn't thought recce regiments weren't required in the Middle East, because had they already been transferred to a division with perceived greater need, or because it was planned all along to transfer 44 Recce to 56th Division?
