This Officer was Adjutant of the 5th Battalion GRENADIER GUARDS during the Division's action from the 25th January to 10th February. During this period the command of the Battalion changed hands four times owing to casualties and all the original Company commanders were also casualties. The result of this was that Lord STANLEY virtually bore the entire brunt of the organising and handling of the Battalion under the most difficult conditions. Apart from the fact that the Battalion was in contact for seventeen days, during which period he showed unwavering courage, there was a continual process of re-organisation within the Battalion which was made an extremely difficult task with all the casualties among senior Officers. This work, in addition to his normal duties as Adjutant in action, he carried out without any difficulty. On the night of 7th February / 8th February Battalion H.Q. consisting of 20 Officers and men was heavily attacked and Lord STANLEY gave an outstanding example of personal courage in resisting the attack successfully after several hours. The conduct of this Officer throughout the entire period the Battalion was in action was largely responsible for the success it achieved. Signed E.J.B.
