It probably belonged to the Anti-Tank Group of the 1st Border, which was holding that area 20-21 Sept. See here: Defending Arnhem © 2006

If you are who I think you are I would suggest asking Mr C or Mr J in June when we are at the Westerbouwing!

The two guns attached to B Company were left at the brickworks. I can find no mention of where this gun has come from and who was manning it.
Thought it might have been S Staffs, but nothing in "By land sea and air"

I'm afraid not - Mr J and Mr C are both Dutch and experts on the Border Regt at Arnhem.

Thanks for the info, but reading it this was the position of D Company. My assumption is that it mentions two guns and there was only 1 at the Westerbouwing.

    Nadine,

From the info you have given IMHO your Uncle would have been in the 1st A/L A/T Battery, whilst Dave's Uncle was in the Border Regt who had a number of 6 pounder anti tank guns on their establishment...Hope this helps in some small way....Do you want to put up your Uncle's name?

Could this Gun have belonged to the Poles? I thought i would throw this in and see if anyone has any ideas.

Probably no Border gun, no. 25 and no. 26 anti tank platoon consisted both of 4 guns. On the 17th, one gun, B-cie "Suvla Bay" had to be left behind in England. On the 18th, 2 guns had to be left behind in Renkum, B-cie "Ypres and Somme". C-cie "Gallipoli III" was at van Lennepweg/Utrechtseweg. C-cie "Hellespont" and "Scimitar" were at Koude Herberg. D- cie "Cambrai" and "Arras III" were at van Borsellenweg.

It may be Polish guns. Have a look in Polen van Driel. It has a map with the Polish gun position along Benedendorpsweg. As the 6 pounder had a large range I presume they were not held in the 1st line of defence, so a little to the back covering the junction of Benedendorpsweg - Veerweg would be a good spot to aim add.

But who or where is mentioned that a 6 pounder was lost on the morning of the 21st at Westerbouwing.... (or must we read 'near' westerbouwing) ???
Can not see to place a 6 pounder gun 'at Westerbouwing anyway as you have no field of fire (or jou must fire into the Betuwe).... But is it possible to aim the gun so low to hit a ferry from that hight)

The 6 pdr knocked out at the Westerbouwing on the 21st was positioned on the Benedendorsweg at the 1st junction (westerley) of the road that leads to the restaurant building. Hope that makes sense!

1st road west of entrenceroad to Westerbouwing? That will be the junction Oude Oosterbeekscheweg - van der Molenalle and the track towards Hooge Oorsprong.
Dave, can you tell me what your source is that there was a 6 Pdr gun situated at that point?

I know this is also an old topic, however i was hoping (crossed fingers) that someone may have come across the answer in the last 2 years.

    Thanks

Just in case some of you Airborne chaps have been struggling to find it. The 1 Border Regiment war diary doesn't appear to be filed where it should be. I was looking in the WO 171 series for it, North West Europe and it's actually filed in the WO 166 series, Home Forces.

    WO 166/15077 1 Border Regiment Jan-Dec 1944
