    Hello All,

Does anyone have any information on the 688 Artisan Works Coy from d-day onwards? Or if anyone can give me any advice as where to start looking for records as I’m struggling to find any mention of them in NW europe until they appear as part of Berlin Force in late 1945?

My grandfather (1917416 Webb A.L) served as a sapper from early 1940 through to his demob on christmas day 1945 in the same unit. From stories he told me his unit (688 Artisan Works Coy) was attached to the 49th division in the rear areas throughout the war. First serving in Iceland for 18 months in 1940-41 (Thanks to this site I have found reference to their iceland war diaries at the public record office). They then did 3 years service in the UK before departing for France (my grandfathers service book states ‘departed uk for France 4th June’). I recall him telling me that they landed on d-day (later in the day) and helped construct the mulberry harbour, then I believe he was involved in clearing minefields, setting up HQ’s, dumps and the like. Later in the war he was involved in some way at Antwerp Port (I have his Dock Pass which was valid from 14th Feb to 8th May 45).

I had thought I would find some mention of them in the beach sub-area listings on gold beach, as I noticed other artisan works companies are mentioned but I cant find any mention of them?
