Hello, I have obtained my father's war records and wonder if anyone can help me expand on them. He spoke very little about his war experience. After he was evactuated from Dunkirk (returning to the UK on the 24th June 1940) He told me the small boat he was on got lost and went half way to America. He the spend the next 4 years in the UK assigned to various units and finished up in 62 BSD in March '43. Nothing much then happened until he embarked on the 8th June 1944 with the B.L.A. He had told me odd things about his time in Belgium and the Netherlands but is there any way to find out more about what his unit did there? Thank you in advance
Hi, Welcome to the forum. It would really help members to help you if you shared your father’s full name and army service number. It would also help if you posted the service record you’ve received on the forum. There will likely be some clues in it which members can investigate and hopefully discover more about your father’s military history. Steve
Thank you for your reply. His name was Sydney Norman Thompson, service no. T129566. I'll split out the relavent parts of the document and upload them tomorrow (most of it is his enlistment and discharge)
Can help with just the journey from May 1945 to disbandment: 62 Base Supply Depot RASC – First Canadian Army to 30 Jun 45 – 1 Reorganisation and Disbandment Centre for disbandment 17 Oct 45 – Nijmegen-NL – Herford 11 Oct 45 – Engr north-west of Herford 17 Oct 45 21st Army Group later British Army of the Rhine (under construction)
Thanks, that would make sense, he mentioned The Netherlands, although he was discharged on the 11th September '45.
