2nd Gordons advanced at 10.00 hrs in a westerly direction from the bridgehead at the canal with the objective of taking the brick-works and crossing the railway line to take positions west of the rail line. After heavy casualties the attack was called off, late afternoon, without taking the brickworks. They returned to their starting positions by the bridge. There are 32 highlanders buried in Mierlo, all killed 25th September 1944.
