604 Field Security Section (FSS) supported 20 Indian Infantry Division through the campaign in Burma and subsequent early post war tasks in Indochina. For most of this period, it was commanded by Temporary Captain Richard William Roberts Ogden. Ogden had joined the Army in early 1940, subsequently serving with Intelligence Corps units. Leaving the UK in 1942, he passed through OTS Bangalore and was commissioned into the 7th Rajput Regiment. After taking a course at the Intelligence School Karachi, he left the Depot with 604 FSS in March 1943.

One of 604 FSS's notable successes was a relentless pursuit and capture of U Nandiya (sometimes Handiya), a Japanese agent active in the Upper Chindwin area and heading the most widespread spy system encountered by Allied forces in Burma (some 80 agents) at that time. Supported by personnel of No 11 Platoon of the Burma Intelligence Corps - headed by Major Denis Patrick Fforde Lutter - 604 FSS had nearly caught U Nandiya on two occasions before his arrest on 1 February 1945 at Natset Village, near Monywa.

Ogden was awarded a MBE for his actions:

Does anyone have a photograph of 604 FSS from the period?

Yes Quarterfinal, I have photos of U Nandiya being interrogated by Richard Ogden and by my father. Also, close ups of U Nandiya and some of his group.

    Hello antwhich,
    Welcome. The museum at:

may appreciate examples that you are prepared to furnish. The endeavours of your father and colleagues warrant remembering. If you have some suitable to add to the forum, these will doubtless be appreciated too. Thanks.
