Hello all, Would someone know whether 6 General Hospital were evacuated under Operation Aerial? My Grandfather ( Sidney Gifford) was an orderly with them at the time. I have the details of the hospital locations in France prior to re grouping in Leeds but also, as I will be visiting the area next year wondered if the actual physical locations of the hospital is known to enable a visit. Many thanks Chris
Hospitals WW2 - Scarlet Finders 6 British General Hospital Dieppe 12/10/39 to 11/39 then to Mesnil-Val; Mesnil-Val 11/39 to 3/40 then to Flocques; Flocques 3/40 to 23/5/40 then to Guerande; Guerande 23/5/40 to 18/6/40 then to UK Leeds; Leeds 18/6/40 to 10/40 then to Luton; Luton 7/10/40 to 1/1/41 then overseas; El Tahag Camp (Egypt) 10/3/41 to 1/42 then to Buseilli; Quassassin (Egypt) 6/42 to 15/12/43 then to U.K.; Llandeilo (Dynevor Castle) 1/44 to 7/44 then overseas; Bayeux 7/44 to 8/44 then to Rouen; Rouen 8/44 to 21/12/44 then to Oestacker; Oestacker (nr. Ghent) 12/44 to 6/45 then to Iserlohn; Iserlohn 6/45 to 31/12/46 (no further War Diary). Guerande is very close to Nantes and St Nazaire so I would guess it was evacuated as part of Op Ariel The above also suggests there is a Diary for them - where that is held I am not sure TD
I assume Scarlet Finders has summarised the details from this TNA file (guess on my part) Location of British General Hospitals | The National Archives Reference: WO 222/1568 Description: Location of British General Hospitals Note: Item open from 1972 Date: 1939-1946 Held by: The National Archives, Kew TD
Hi Chris Legge It is some time since you posted your note regarding your Grandfather but hopefully you will pick up this message ok. My father was also at 6th General Hospital, while it was based in France at the beginning of the war, and at the same time as your Grandfather, his position was that of Nursing Orderly C11. I have some information that may be of interest if you would like to reply. Regards Melvyn
