5th Foresters - Surviving Descendants & History

    Hello everyone,

I've posted here previously about my grandfather and his military service, but wanted to make more of a general thread. I'm looking for more information pertaining to the Foresters and would love to hear from descendants of the Foresters. If only to compare notes, if nothing else.

For a little background: my grandfather, James (Jim/Jimmy) Law, was a member of the Foresters and I've confirmed he served in Salerno circa September 9th 1943. Which means he was likely part of Operation AVALANCHE. He was also part of the General Service Corps (his service number is as follows - 14251261 / APV000751824).

I know he was wounded in action in Salerno September 16th 1943, too, and received the following medals: 1939-45 Star, African Star with Bar (likely indicating service in North Africa), Italy Star, Defense Medal, and War Medal.

He also served and was friends with a George Satterthwaite who was sadly KIA September 4th 1944 (aged 22).

And that's really the extent of what I know at present. I'm in the process of ordering his death certificate, and will be pursuing getting access to his military records thereafter. Folks here have been super helpful too with filling in some gaps for me.

Growing up (I'm in my late 30s), I was told my grandfather was a pathfinder who served in North Africa and Italy, but it's becoming increasingly clear this isn't the case. Which has only fueled my desire to look further into his history to get to the root of things.

If you have any further information on the Foresters, recognize the name James Law, or are a relation of George Satterthwaite's (I know he and his brother were survived by their sister who died in 2006), I would love to hear what y'all know!

    All the best.

    Rick,

I've added your two previous threads for newcomers who may appear: James (Jim / Jimmy) LAW - 21st Independent Parachute Company Search and 5th Sherwood Foresters in WW2

The full title of his unit being: 5th Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment) or 5 Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment.

Is there a Facebook group for the regiment? Might be worth adding a post there. Even getting a letter or notice published in their regiment journal (of their successor unit).

Appreciate it, David. As to if there's a facebook group or not, I'm unfortunately not on Facebook, so I wouldn't know. I hadn't thought to look into their successor unit though.
