Would be very grateful for any info on where the bn was 31/08/1943. Was there any particular incident that caused 12 casualties that day 5 of whom have no known grave & are listed on the Brookwood Memorial. Chris
No detail in the Hampshires' history, other than the Hampshire Brigade was training in the Bizerta area for Salerno. Mention is made of a dry landing exercise but there may also have been some wet activities where the sea could have claimed some? Hold on, maybe the date is open to dispute: On 1st September Headquarters, 46th Division, was established on board U.S.S. Biscayne and the loading of vehicles, guns and stores began. There was a fatal accident while men of the 5th Battalion were loading mines on to a truck; fifteen men were killed and thirty injured, including "C" Company Commander, Captain Foster-Moore.
The names commemorated at Brookwood are: 5505721 - Private Thomas Emery Bridger 5501380 - Serjeant George William Flegg 5500275 - Serjeant Edward Lionel Lipscomb 5503379 - L/Corporal Walter Charles Seton 5512820 - L/Corporal Ronald Tanner. Captain Edward Bryan Foster-Moore was awarded an MC, possibly for the Sidi Nsir action? of which C company managed to survive largely intacted.
Got the names already thanks; just trying to eliminate the non UK deaths before starting on a massive grave search
