Photo of my grandfather, John Rosenberg - Private, No 5949987, Reconnaissance. As you can see, not all of the letters on the building in the background are visible. I'd love to know what the full word says. I assume it's the name of the barracks. It would be great to identify the location. Also, can anyone tell me anything about the cap badge? Thanks.

    Shaun,
    You might recognise this chap?

    I'm afraid I don't. But it's a great photo!

    Shaun,
Your grandfather's army number is from the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment. He must have enlisted in the Beds and Herts and transferred to the Recce Corps. The soldier in the Barbadoes Squad photograph is named as J H Rosenberg?

Not sure what the cap badge is, but doesn't look like a Reconnaissance Corps badge to me, so more than likely earlier before transfer to Recce.

My grandfather came from Failsworth near Manchester. Wouldn't it be more likely that he would have joined one of the local regiments? Regards his army number, I'd been told that it didn't correlate to the regiment you were attached to. The photo of a John H Rosenberg is intriguing because my grandfather's middle name was John. That said, the individual in the photograph looks nothing like my grandfather. Many thanks for your responses.

That's definitely my grandfather, but the individual in the photograph most certainly isn't. Is it possible that he's elsewhere on the full photograph, and that they've put the correct name under the wrong individual? Many thanks for your help in this matter. I'm new to this site, so getting used to navigating it, etc.

    Shaun,
I can recommend the book, Only the Enemy in Front and also an Osprey publication under the Elite series all about the Reconnaissance Corps.
Otherwise not too much published on the subject.

Not necessarily, some county regiments with small populations recruited in the large cities.
I know the Wilts recruited in Birmingham & London.
Nothing surprising in Beds & Herts recruiting in Manchester after all it was the British Army.
Your Grandad's number is from the block allocated to the Beds & Herts.
    Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Regiment 5942001 - 5998000
That shows which regiment he originally enlisted into.

Have you applied to the MoD for his service records yet?

Thanks for this information. I'm certainly learning a lot from you guys. I'm in the process of applying to the MOD for my grandfather's service records - very much looking forward to finding out more.

Would it be possible for you to print the full photograph, showing all the soldiers? Also, do you have any other information on this photo. Thanks

    Shaun,
Take a look at the two photographs side by side. They may have been taken six years apart?
The service records will confirm the date your grandfather joined the Beds & Herts.
