    4th Anti-Aircraft Regiment, RA
    Station: Bulford
    Batteries: 16th (Bhurtpore), 18th, 20th AA Batteries; 3rd Light AA Battery

    23rd AA Bty was formed in the regiment on 5 September 1939 to replace 20th AA Bty, which went to Alexandria, Egypt. On 12 October 1939 23rd AA Battery was renumbered 27th. The regiment was mobilized under 3rd Anti-Aircraft Brigade with 3rd, 16th, 18th and 27th AA Batteries. It moved to France with the brigade on 9 November 1939 and moved to the Le Havre. In February 1940, it later transferred to the 4th Anti-Aircraft Brigade and defended the airfields around Aubigny and Arras in III Corps area. It was reorganized and lost 16th, 18th and 27th Batteries. It gained 1st and 5th Batteries in turn. It was located with 1st and 3rd Batteries (3” guns) at GHQ Arras and 5th Battery (3.7” guns) at I Corps Ammunition Dump. 5th Battery left on 10 May and 27th Battery returned. The regiment then moved to Tournai and by 19 May it was located at Guesnain near Douai. It was immediately ordered to Temlewuve between Orchies and Lille. By 25 May the regiment was at Dunkrik. On 29 May 1940 it assembled at Bray Dunes in Dunkirk and embarked on 31 May.
    On return to the United Kingdom it was retitled a Heavy AA Regiment on 1 June 1940. It reformed at Aperporth with 5th, 6th and 18th Batteries with 3.7” guns. It served under 26th Anti-Aircraft Brigade in London in the autumn of 1940 and in February 1941. 18th HAA Battery left for Iceland and 182nd Light AA Battery joined the regiment on 30 May 1941.
    The regiment was then sent to Malta in July 1941 and joined 10th Anti-Aircraft Brigade there. In January 1942, it had 5th and 6th AA Batteries under command in Malta. 182nd Light AA Battery left on 24 September 1941. It served there for the rest of the war. 27th HAA Battery officially left on 18 January 1944. 16th HAA Battery officially left and 6th HAA and 258th LAA Batteries joined on 1 July 1944.
