4th Field Squadron location around 29th March 1945

Discussion in 'Royal Engineers' started by Robert McShane, Mar 23, 2025.

  1. Looking for information on 4 Fd Sqn activities in March 45 specifically 29th when Gerald Douglas Doyle 2077766 was wounded and later died of wounds.
    He's buried in Reichswald cemetery.
He was my cousin twice removed on my mothers side.
I also served with the RE as did his father in WW1 with my Great Grandfather as dispatch riders.

    Robert,

Always helps to add the CWGC link, as it may include some clues: https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/2036265/gerald-douglas-doyle/ I note the grave was concentrated in 1947, with a map reference and name where it had been.

His name and number have not appeared here before your post.

Some context and details here: 4 Field Squadron, Royal Engineers war diary

I did my usual online search: "4 Field Squadron" site:ww2talk.com this found approx. twenty threads, but they do not appear to refer to 1945.

You know that the definitive answer lies in his official Service Record and the War Diary - that may have some details. Might be best to check: Ancestry - War Diaries

    Robert,

His unit was permanently attached to an armoured brigade, from memory, so a book about them may refer to the incident. Indeed even a thread (there are nearly 200!) here on the bitter contested Reichswald battle.

    Robert,

4 Field RE, was part of 7th Armoured Division, they crossed the Rhine near Wesel exactly 80 years ago, (23-24 March 1945) and then they went up north.
Here is something written about 4 Field squadron on the 29th of March, they where close to Sudlohn. What makes sence as he is burried at the Reichswald Cemetery.

    Battles 1945

Hope you will find more details.
