These pages only go as far as the 7th October 1944.
Are you able to show the pages for the 19th, 20th and 21st October?
    I have problem...
The Commonwealth War Graves gives the following information:-

    The 4th Bn the Lincoln Regiment - GILMOUR, HUGH - Private - 4202384 - Died 14/10/1944 - Aged 27 - Lincolnshire Regiment - United Kingdom - Buried in Plot - I. C. 1. - OVERLOON WAR CEMETERY. The Netherlands.
It appears to me from what I have discovered that the 4th Bn was nowhere near this area - Overloon - on the 20th, the date of his KIA on his grave.
The family story of his death is that he died during an advance and was originally buried at the side of the road.
    Thanks for your information.

    Iceni,

He was probably buried at Overloon because a number of graves of the Lincolns were concentrated there. Men were not finally buried exactly where they fell or even in a cemetery close to where they died. Unfortunately, nothing is ever as simple as that.

    Cheers - Rob

i have been MIA for a few days!

I thankyou for supplying the WD for the month of October. I think that I have now solved the puzzle of Pte Hugh Gilmour.

I cannot leave this story without noting that an Officer of the 4th Bn suffered a 'slight wound to the leg' and this was mentioned in the WD, but the death of Pte Hugh Gilmour passes with any comment at all.

Kipling's poem "Tommy Atkins" says it all.

    hi,

been a while, was quite busy with other stuff than researching..

quick note about pvt Gilmour, I will check a dutch book about all the actions in west brabant during 1944.. maybe he is mentioned in there..

on my search, we are slowly drying out of options to go through, sadly, but we got a ton of info anyhow, and the best thing, is that we got into contact with the family..

next up im going to start a research on the other side, the german side, my very good friend has a german wife, her grandfather got killed in belgium and nothing is known about him.. he was a draftee btw.. going to be interesting in trying to find any info..

    the search continues!

    Morning Ramacal,

Just wanted to thank you for posting the WD above.

I've been researching the Willenhall RoH and the above was of enormous help,

I've now copied the above file and Private Gilmour is not mentioned in the missing men file for North West Europe.

Thanks Graeme. Glad the diary was useful to you

Better late than never. Just came across this post again and had another look, now that I have lots more files on the Lincolns. The above info is incorrect, in that Private Gilmour died serving with 2 Lincolns on 14 October 1944, in the area of Overloon. They suffered 144 casualties that day.

Gilmore is listed as 2 Lincolns on CWGC.

Sent a PM to the poster, who has not been online here since last year.
