Hi guys Does anybody know if the RA Field Regiments in the 49th during the NWE campaign used towed 25 Pdrs? These would be the 69th, 143th, 185th and 74th ( the 74th replacing the 185th from Nov 1944)? Cheers Martyn
Just had a flick in Delaforce's Polar Bears & indeed mention is made of towed 25 pdrs & a couple of pics too. (aslo bumping this for the real gunner types to see)
As far as i can see, all towed except 74th which was SP. Best Rob PS, The 10th Medium Regt RA was the 49th Div's sole attached on-call Medium Regt from 31st Dec 44 - April 1945
The 74th Field Regt, RA, was with the 50th (Northumbrian) Divison from 3 September 1939 to 29 November 1944, when it transferred to the Polar Bears; 50 Div being in the process of reducing down to a Training Cadre. It hailed from South Shields and had been the permanent FR support for the 151st Infantry Brigade - 6th, 8th and 9th Bn's Durham Light Infantry. It towed 25-pdrs at the time of D-Day and I understand its place in the landings on Gold Beach was taken temporarily by a FR with SP Sextons. It is quite possible, as Rob's post indicates, that it converted to SP later in the NW Europe campaign. I will see what I can find that confirms one way or another. Best, Steve.
