An extract from a letter of 22 April 1945 from my dad (ex 49 Recce, now 147 Brigade) to my mum on meeting up with 49 Recce friends: ‘I saw some of the old people the other day - Peter Hill, Jimmy Stone, Harry Judge. They have just had a glorious drive through North Holland, liberating villages and meeting hardly any Germans at all. I must say that at the moment the Germans are quieter than I have ever known them before. Of course, they are completely cut off from Germany and their food and other supplies must be a trifle chaotic’.
